“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” is heading to theaters on May 17.

Rumored to be Tom Cruise’s last run as the infamous Ethan Hunt, the upcoming film wraps up the events of the previous “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” concluding Hunt’s showdown with a sinister rogue AI. Joining Cruise are Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, and Angela Bassett. The film is directed by Christopher McQuarrie.

Since first screening in 1996, the “Mission: Impossible” films have always been renowned for their breathtaking stunts, which have only increased in scale and risk in their following entries. As Cruise heads towards his rumored final “Mission: Impossible” film, we take a look at some of his most infamous stunts in the series.

“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”: Free-falling from a plane

Cruise’s stunts, beyond their cinematic appeal, have equally served as marketing tools for the “Mission: Impossible” films. The upcoming “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” is no different, where viewers are privy to an early scene of Cruise sticking a camera rig on his hip and jumping off a plane at 12,000 feet. And for what? A close-up shot of Hunt free-falling. Talk about the effort and dedication for a brief scene.

“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”: Tom Cruise hangs from a plane… again

We’re all familiar with Cruise’s infamous stunt in “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” where he hangs on a moving cargo plane. For his latest film, Cruise takes it to another level—despite the smaller craft—moving and tumbling around a flying biplane.

“Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”: Ethan Hunt scales Burj Khalifa

Equal parts dedicated actor and adrenaline junkie, who knows what went inside Cruise’s mind when he chose to scale the world’s tallest building with only a safety harness? At least he didn’t actually remove the harness (for real) as he does in the film.

“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning”: Driving a bike off a cliff

Cruise is a stickler for detail when it comes to his stunts, and he reportedly did 500 skydives and 13,000 motocross jumps to prepare for the film’s biggest setpiece.

“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning”: Simple fight scenes aren’t enough

Twenty-nine years and eight films under his belt as Ethan Hunt, Cruise can probably do regular fight scenes with his eyes closed. But on a moving train? That’ll suffice.

“Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation”: Holding on for dear life

Being inside an aircraft can be scary enough as it is—what more when you’re dangling outside with nothing but a safety harness securing you to the plane?

“Mission: Impossible – Fallout”: Tom Cruise breaks his ankle for cinema

In what would be a ‘simple’ stunt (by Cruise’s standards), he unfortunately breaks his ankle as he slams his foot jumping across a building. But like a true professional, Cruise painstakingly pulls himself up, finishes the take, and continues the chase on one leg as Hunt probably would in real life.

“Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation”: Tom Cruise can hold his breath for six minutes

It’s already difficult to hold your breath underwater in itself. But to do that for six minutes straight while moving around? Now that’s just taking it to a whole new level.

“Mission: Impossible – Fallout”: Tom Cruise almost falls off a helicopter

How do you know a stunt is real? When everyone on set thought you fell off the helicopter for real. “I actually thought he fell. I heard myself scream,” said “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” star Rebecca Ferguson.

“Mission: Impossible – Fallout”: Yes, he can also pilot helicopters

Cruise is known to have licenses for piloting all sorts of vehicles, from jets and helicopters to bikes and boats. For “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” he channeled his inner Mmverick to pilot a helicopter through a narrow valley.
