How ‘What hafen Vella?’ is still in our minds more than a decade since it first aired | Lifestyle.INQ

These days, my earworm is not a song, but a monologue.

I know I’m not alone. These past few weeks, not a day has gone by without hearing “what hafen Vella?” either while scrolling through TikTok or Facebook, overheard in conversations, or literally just playing in our heads.

“What hafen Vella? Why you crying agen? I know, vamfyre, ryt? Vamfyre will feyt to me!”

@zeinvcxy What hafen vella….Why u crying again? I know….vamfire! right? Vampire will feyt me! I trusted to protect bella!!but you did not!I will sure you die edward!!….. I will sure you die!…….. #itsshowtime #kalokalike ♬ original sound – Filipino Twilighttok 🍎 – Filipino Twilightok 🐀

The viral spoof originated from a 2013 “It’s Showtime: Kalokalike” contestant, Cristopher Diwata. The fish dealer from Bataan came on the program as a lookalike of Taylor Lautner and, to showcase the similarities, performed a solo skit as Lautner’s character Jacob Black from the “Twilight” series.

Diwata’s passionate portrayal of Black was actually an entirely made-up scenario, he revealed in an interview. The lines he has now become so famous for are not even in “Twilight” franchise.

While the video of his now decades-old performance has been making the rounds online for years, it once again resurfaced this month, with hundreds of iterations being posted all over social media. The virality of “what hafen Vella” has also gotten brands jumping onto the trend (Diwata even got his own brand deals, too, recreating that years-old performance).

Here are some of our favorite takes:

What better way to promote “Twilight”’s availability for streaming, “ryt?”

SB19’s Pablo takes it a step further by not just simply dubbing the monologue, but instead, saying the lines himself:

Recreating memes sounds like a great father-and-son bonding activity, if we’re taking it from Piolo and Inigo Pascual:
