One of Manila’s adored chefs, Toshiro Okajima of Tsukiji Makati, has passed away, the iconic Japanese restaurant announced on its official social media channels.
“We express our heartfelt gratitude for his contributions, creativity, and the warmth he shared with everyone around him making Tsukiji among Asia’s best restaurants. Chef Okajima’s legacy will live on through the memories he created and the lives he touched. Arigato gozaimasu.”
Friends, industry colleagues, fans, and customers also conveyed their sadness in the comments section after learning about the loss of the sushi legend—many praised his warmth and hospitality, the exceptional food he prepared for customers (“His sashimi was the best in Manila. Bar none. It was better than being in Tokyo, where I am from,” wrote one user), and the engaging friendliness he extended to every person who came into the restaurant.
Crosta’s Tommy Woudwyk wrote on Tsukiji’s post: “He was a beacon of hospitality. Always making time to say hello and give candy to our son whenever we would visit. 🥺🥺🥺 Thank you for everything chef!”
He will be dearly missed.
